Last week Mary Bernier introduced us to new member Elaine Allen.   Elaine grew up in Sioux City, Iowa, as the oldest of six children in a single-parent family.  She graduated from Iowa State University with Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in journalism and mass communication.  She and her husband, Chris Allen, moved to Omaha in 1996, when he joined the UNO faculty in the School of Communication.  They have been married 35 years and have two grown children: a daughter, Sarah, who lives in Rogers, Arkansas, with her husband, Anthony, and two daughters; and a son, Joe, who lives in Eugene, Oregon, with his life partner, Karen.

In 2011-2012, Elaine and Chris lived in Muscat, Oman, while he taught at Sultan Qaboos University as a Fulbright Scholar.  Elaine recently retired from her full time job as a business analyst at Mutual of Omaha.  She has been the Executive Director of the Nebraska Polio Survivors Association for the past 11 years.  She is past newsletter editor and Co-President of the now-defunct UNO Women’s Club. She serves on the Board of Trustees of the Omaha Press Club Foundation and on the Omaha Press Club’s Communication Committee. Welcome, Elaine!
