Salvation Army Bell Ringers Needed
One of our favorite community projects each year is Salvation Army Bell Ringing.  We will be ringing bells at the Hy-Vee at 132nd & Dodge on Saturday December 20. Our first two Saturdays several Rotarians braved the cold.We will be at the East and West doors from 10:00 a.m. -4:00 p.m.  Two people are needed for each shift.  To volunteer for a shift go to the December date on the website calendar, click on it, and sign up on the online registration. Coordinating this year’s efforts is Eli McNichols.  See photos here.
Rotary Means Business
The next Rotary Means Business meeting is December 10 from 7:00 a.m.-8:30 a.m.  The meeting will be held at the First Westroads Bank at 15730 West Dodge, Omaha, Neb.  68118.
My First Year
I celebrated my first year as Executive Secretary on Nov. 18.  Thanks to some encouragement, I wrote the attached article about how I came to the club and some of the observations I have made.  You can read it here.
Holiday Open House
Dec. 11 Highlights
In getting to know our Yearlings better, they were asked what was their favorite Christmas song. Answers ranged from "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" to spiritual favorites.

David Kutler received a perfect attendance pin for 16 years in November.

New members Timothy Sheehy and Molly Reinecke were introduced to the club by John Hoich and Tom Kerfoot respectfully.

Brent Pohlman, Midwest Labs, talked about finding leadership in yourself.  Its important to look within and he uses the following three words to guide him: people, process and technology. He has learned a great deal from people who lead well including Coach Dick Vermeil. He also indicated it is key to put processes in place and look at the technology to support efforts.  He advised that it also important to keep looking forward by living in the moment and keeping family first.

Book Club in January
The next Rotary Book Club Meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, January 13, at 5:30 p.m.  (We do not meet in December due to the Holidays.)  We will meet at Jericho's at 117th & Dodge.  We will be discussing the book, "Thunderstruck" by Erik Larson, recommended by Ann Olmsted. This is a New York Times Bestseller.  A true story of love, murder, and the last moments of the "great hush" before wireless radio connected the world. He interweaves gripping storylines about a cryptic murderer and the race for technology in the early 20th century.

Winter Night Watch
Winter’s frigid temperatures along with snow, ice and wind can make survival a challenge for Omaha’s homeless and near-homeless population. Salvation Army mobile food trucks make multiple stops across the city to distribute hot meals and beverages, as well as winter coats, gloves, hats, socks and blankets to anyone in need. Once again, this year Suburban Rotary is providing volunteers to serve meals; two persons per shift.

Dates are: Tuesday, January 6,Thursday, January 15, Tuesday, January 20, Tuesday, February 3, Thursday, February 12, and Tuesday, February 17. You can go to the calendar on the website and sign up for those dates.

Volunteers meet at 10629 Burt Street Omaha at 5: 15 p.m. and work until 8:15 p.m.

Last year we helped provided more than 8,000 meals and hundreds of winter outerwear items to those struggling to survive the harsh winter.
District Governor's December Message
Rotary District 5650 Rotarians—Happy December! I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving with family, friends, and community!! There are so many generous acts of kindness that happen at this time of year from serving meals for others, ringing bells for the Salvation Army, and donating coats, hats, and gloves so people can stay warm.

This past weekend, I was reminded of that kindness in my own Elkhorn neighborhood, when we had the first meaningful snow of the season. We all worked together to help make sure that everyone’s driveways and sidewalks were clear of snow. I am incredibly grateful for the spirit of community that looks out for those around us.

When I was growing up there was a song in 1971 that was extremely popular called “I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing in Perfect Harmony” by the group called the “The New Seekers”. It is a simple song and idealist, but the song’s message is an analogy for what we do as Rotarians in our communities and the world to create hope, build peace, and make an impact. When you combine the voices of Rotarians from all over the world, we do help “The World to Sing in Perfect Harmony!”
I wanted to give a big shout out to every Rotary Club in our District for everything you did in November to “Unite for Good” and serve your communities and the world! Thank you!!

Also, remember that December is Disease Prevention and Treatment Month on our Rotary calendar.

“We believe good health care is everyone’s right. Yet 400 million people in the world can’t afford or don’t have access to basic health care.
Disease results in misery, pain, and poverty for millions of people worldwide. That’s why treating and preventing disease is so important to us. We lead efforts both large and small. We set up temporary clinics, blood donation centers, and training facilities in underserved communities struggling with outbreaks and health care access. We design and build infrastructure that allows doctors, patients, and governments to work together.

Our members combat diseases like malaria, HIV/AIDS, Alzheimer’s, multiple sclerosis, diabetes, and polio. Prevention is important, which is why we also focus on health education and bringing people routine hearing, vision, and dental care.

How Rotary makes help happen

We educate and equip communities to stop the spread of life-threatening diseases. Rotary members have hundreds of health projects underway around the world at any given time.”

As I sit here looking out the window at the beautiful snow, it reminds me of how blessed we are to live in such a wonderful place where we can make such a difference in our communities and the world through Rotary.

Enjoy this month of December. Remember to invite a guest to your Rotary Club meeting. Grow your membership. One meeting could change their life and yours as well. Focus on your Rotary Club experience for your members and guests. Take care of your family, friends, and community and Happy Holidays!
