Last week Brian Johnson and Gary Nachman were our greeters. Jason Currie gave the invocation. We had several announcements and presentations. Mei Wu presented Ward Peters and all the August birthday folks with a "getting old sucks" present to be shared with the club. Judy Cline, Chair of the Membership Committeee, drew a winner for a free lunch for bringing a guest in August. Bob Perrin won the lunch. Curt recognized David Kerber with a Rotary hat for being a "Gift to the World" for his work on the Brush Up Nebraska project. David Kutler introduced M.J. Hawkins from Children's Hospital who talked to us about the HEROES Childhood Obesity program. The RISK bag was at $260 and Dick Miller won a free lunch.
Last week Frank McGree recognized Gary Stoneburg, Eric Dawson, Kathryn Schubert, and Peggy Carrell as Friends of Suburban Rotary for their donations of $2500 to our local Suburban Foundation. The Suburban Rotary Foundation supports our scholarship program as well as many local and international projects. Thank you for your generosity!
Last week David Kutler introduced us to new member Rebecca Vinton. Rebecca is the President and CEO of WELLCOM (formerly Wellness Council of the Midlands). They partner with employers to deliver wellness programs that impact employee health and well-being. Rebecca is a frequent speaker at local, regional, and national conferences on the importance of worksite wellness programs as a strategic business approach.
She is also active in the community serving on various non-profit Boards such as Ted E. Bear Hollow and Live Well Omaha. Becky was awarded the Hollie Bethel Distinguished Alumni Award from the UNO College of Education. She is a graduate of Leadership Omaha and holds a B.A. from the University of South Dakota and an M.A. in Health Education from UNO.
In her free time, Rebecca enjoys spending time with her two children, singing in her worship band in church, and walking her dogs. Welcome, Rebecca!
Last week Bob Perrin introduced us to new member Judy Sealer. Judy is the Executive Director of the Golden Living Center in Omaha, a rehab and skilled nursing facility. Judy holds a B.A. in Psychology and earned her Master's from UNO in Public Administration. She is a past member of our club and of the Western Douglas County Rotary.
Judy was recently widowed after 50 years of marriage. She has two adult sons and five grandchildren. In her free time, Judy plays the piano, sings in Omaha Voices, and plays bridge. She is a proud downtown resident living in the Greenhouse overlooking the Central Park Mall. Welcome back, Judy!
For the next 2 weeks members of the Military Affairs Committee will be sitting at the back table selling Savings Sidekick coupon books. They are $20 and proceeds will benefit projects for area service people. In the past the MA committee has supported a Winter Wonderland event for families of deployed troops, a camp for children of soldiers with special needs, a holiday dinner for soldiers, etc. You can also donate books to area military families by making a donation to the MA committee. Donations of $100 or more can be to the Suburban Rotary Charitable Foundation for tax purposes.
The Halloween Monster Mash run/walk will be held on Sunday October, 11th. This is a joint project with Rotary and Children's Hospital to benefit childhood obesity education programs.
