Last week Mike Langford and Dave Nelson served as Greeters. Rose Mary Hefley gave the invocation. David Gerard led the singing. President Roxy Orr recognized Ron Pearson as a Rotarian that "Lights Up Rotary". We had several announcements and presentations. Substitute-Secretary Jared Bakewell introduced Kathryn Schubert as the "Rotarian of the Day". Jeff Bakewell introduced Frank Goldberg who talked about the Rotary Foundation. The RISK bag was at $91 and Ron Pearson won a free lunch.

Nate was recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow for his donations of $1000 to the Rotary Foundation. Here's what he had to say about supporting the Foundation, " It has been my practice to make a very simple evaluation when I consider making a donation: Will my donation support a worthy cause, maximizing benefits to the recipients? In the four years since I became a Rotarian I have been very impressed with Rotary's projects around the world whether it is undertaking eradication of polio, fighting poverty or other significant projects. It was interesting to learn how such a major organization has so successfully and efficiently performed in carrying out such missions."
Kathryn was recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow+1 for her donations of $2000 to the Rotary Foundation. Here's what she had to say, "I donate to The Rotary Foundtion because it is a foundation that I can trust. Being a Rotarian, I believe it is our duty to learn what it is we support and stand for as an international organization. Once I learned about the great things TRF did, and then I learned how responsibly the trustees manage the foundation, I felt it was something I could support financially. I started my giving with the EREY."
Eric was recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow +4 for his donations of $5000 to the Rotary Foundation. Here's why Eric supports the Foundation, "Giving to The Rotary Foundation gives me the opportunity to help people around the world that don’t have the necessities in life such as clean drinking water, vaccinations, and a good education. Many people in the United States take these items for granted and as Rotarians it’s our responsibility to educate and promote goodwill throughout the world."

Every year each Rotarian is asked to donate $100 to the Rotary Foundation in support of programs that alleviate disease, hunger, poverty, and promote peach and understanding. We have seen the benefit of supporting the Rotary Foundation in the last few years with matching grants to support the Deaf School in Nicaragua and the girls' school in Afghanistan. The generosity of Rotarians around the world make these projects (and thousands like them) possible.

Rotary International is recognizing members who help grow Rotary by bringing in new members with special pins/backers this year. Last week Rose Mary Hefley recognized John Hoich for bringing in new member Aaron Gunderson. Correction from last week: Katie Henry recognized Grant Stanley for bringing in new member Adam Nordstrom.
Save the date for the November Keep the Kids Warm After Hours at Lindley Clothing on November 20th from 5-7pm. Will feature food from Frank's pizza, beverages, and music by Mark Sanford. Donations of gently used coats (kids and adult sizes) are appreciated and cash donations to purchase clothing/coats.
It's time for that annual Suburban Rotary tradition- bell ringing for the Salvation Army! Due to some scheduling issues with JCPenney/Salvation Army, we have new locations: Bakers at 155th and Dodge and 2 HyVee Stores (90th and Center and 132nd and Dodge). We will ring bells on Saturday, November 29th and Saturday, December 13th from 10am-4pm in 1.5 hour shifts. All shifts will be outside so please dress warmly and wear your Rotarian At Work t-shirt over your coat.
We have 4 shifts at 5 locations on two dates so we need 80 volunteers. Please feel free to sign up your friends, families, kids, grandkids, etc. Just register them as "Bob's kids, etc."
To sign up click on the event in the newsletter or on the calendar on the website, then it will ask you to login. After logging in, choose BELL RINGING and pick your shift.
Since we don't meet on Thanksgiving, we are asking you to consider donating your lunch money ($15) from that day to buy an attendance credit (will be used for your next missed meeting) and all the proceeds will go to Polio Plus! THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 13TH IS THE LAST DAY TO DO THIS.
It's time to start collecting for the annual Santa's Workshop at Crestridge Magnet School.
Each year, Crestridge Elementary School sets up a “store” to shop for holiday gifts for children that are in need. These children come into the store and may pick out a gift for each of their family members. Last year, there were 80 – 90 kids that came through the shop. With the help of the Crestridge School, we have made a “wish list” of items that are most chosen by the kids, and a list of items that they wish not to be donated. The date of the event is December 15th. We are hoping for each Rotarian to donate gently used or new item(s) to help make the Santa Shop a success. These items do not need to be expensive.
Wish list….Key chains, wallets, ties, little purses, cutesy kid socks, adult socks, coffee mugs, tools, men’s and women’s cologne, sports stuff, makeup, jewelry, stuffed animals, UNO cards, playing cards, coloring books and crayons, scarves, mittens, toys, baby toys, cutesy picture frames…or tissue paper and gift bags of all sizes.
Since we know that people’s lives are busy, we are offering an easy shopping idea this year. We will have two baskets available for purchase, one for $10 and one for $20. These baskets will contain assorted items from the wish list. We will have baskets available for purchase at our next meeting on November 6th. Of course, you may make a cash donation in any amount and that will be used to purchase items for the shop. Thank you very much for helping make this year’s Santa Shop a success.
