Meeting re-cap 12/10

Last week Mike Manahan and Jared Wills served as our Greeters. Sarah Kalhorn-Wisecup gave our invocation. We had several presentations and announcements. Secretary Kevin Welsh recognized December birthdays. We had a new member introduction. Jack Hosking introduced Lauren Cencic who talked about the plans for a rapid transit bus system in Omaha. The RISK bag was at $123 and Sol Kutler won a free lunch.

Weather Policy

The Board met and voted today to cancel Suburban Rotary including Board/Yearlings meetings if/when the University of Nebraska at Omaha cancels classes NOT OPS. Please keep this in mind as we head into January. Also, if you are considering a make-up, please note that NW, West, Downtown, Morning, and North all cancel when OPS cancels and Millard cancels when Millard Public Schools cancels.

Welcome Patrick McNamara!

Last week Scott Hahn introduced us to new member Patrick McNamara. Patrick is an attorney with his own firm and advises a number of prominent businesses and individuals in the metro in the areas of contracts, disputes, lititgation and employment/labor law. He also devotes a significant portion of his practice to estate planning, wills, and trusts.

Patrick grew up in Long Island, New York and attended the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC. Pat attended law school back in New York where he met his wife, Katherine, an Omaha native. After three years of practicing law in New York, the couple returned to Omaha. Katherine is an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Southern District of Iowa.

In his free time, Patrick likes to cook, play golf, and watch the New York Mets and Jets. He also is a Creighton basketball fan. Welcome, Patrick!

Paul Harris Fellows

Last week Foundation Chair Julie Livingston recognized Rotarians for their giving to the International Rotary Foundation. The Rotary Foundation supports causes around the world including health, nutrition, literacy, and disease-eradication efforts. Rotary Foundation funds have been used by our club to send science kits to the girls' school in Afghanistan, as well as for local projects such as the Crestridge Health Fair.

We were pleased to recognize Jeff Chisham as a new Paul Harris Fellows for his donations to the Rotary Foundation of $1000. Here's why he said he gives, "It’s not just international and it’s not just local. The money is spent on what is intended. Looking at the Foundation from a fiduciary standpoint TRF does a good job at stewardship.”

Kay Farrell and David Kutler were recognized as Paul Harris Fellows+2 for their donations of $3000. Kay said “My father respected Rotary and I was so proud to join and have loved it ever since. I support the Foundation because that’s what we do!” David gives “because it’s the right thing to do. It’s hard to do things outside our community and TRF makes it possible.”

Roxy Orr and Curt Peters were recognized as Paul Harris Fellows +4 for their donations of $5000 to the Rotary Foundation.

Curt says he gives "Because Julie calls and tells me I have to." Then he said, “Even though Suburban Rotary does amazing projects locally, I think it’s equally important to support projects that help people worldwide.”

Roxy says, “I think it’s a wonderful way to give back and make my contribution more valuable. TRF makes my money work harder. You can do so much more as a group—the same philosophy as to why I belong to Rotary."

Jerry Gordman was recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow+6 for his donations of $7000 to the Rotary Foundation. Jerry continues to give because he believes in Rotary and what it does. He thinks highly of what’s being done by TRF and feels good being a part of it.

Military Affairs Projects

Last week Roger Groff announced the distribution of funds for project supporting the military. These funds were raised from three sources: coupon book sales in the fall, donations from Rotary members, and matching funds from our local Foundation (which you support with donations throughout the year.)

$1000 to support the Offutt Enlisted Spouses Club Winter Wonderland (photos of this event last Saturday below)

$1500 to support Wounded Warriors

$1500 to support Camp Offutt (would not have happened this year without this donation)

$700 to Spring SPA

$650 for the Block Party for the troops

Thank you for your incredibly generous support of those serving locally in the military!

Roger attended this event last weekend and said this, " I attended the Offutt Enlisted Spouses Club Winter Wonderland event this morning. They had breakfast for over 700 folks who attended. After every prize drawing and at least every 30 minutes the announcer thanked the three major sponsors of the event and of course one was SUBURBAN ROTARY. I had dozens of folks come up to me to thank Rotary for helping make this such a fun event. "

Crestridge Santa's Workshop

Ashley Baker announced rather than collecting funds for the Santa's Workshop gifts for Crestridge students that the Trustees had allocated $500 in funds from our local Foundation to go towards this. THANK YOU for your donations to our fundraiser throughout the year that provide for this and many other projects including our $50,000 a year in scholarships.

If you'd like to volunteer to help students select gifts this week, we have an opening from 1030-1130 tomorrow, Tuesday 12/15. Please contact Ashley or Jennifer to sign up.
