Scholarship Luncheon
For those of you who have registered we cannot wait to see you at the Scholarship Luncheon at Happy Hollow Country Club on April 16.  Please get there by 11:30 a.m. and pick up your name badge at the registration table.  We are so proud of the students being honored that day.  Read about their accomplishments here.
Bring Your Kinds/Grandkids April 23
We are reaching out to recruit more members ages 25-45 on April 23.  We have a fantastic speaker that day and invite you to bring a guest.  If you let our Executive Secretary, Deb Daley, know by April 17 who you are bringing lunch is on us. Can you bring someone April 23?

About My Work:
  • After beginning my career at a consulting firm in New York City, I’ve spent the last decade in marketing and account leadership at Hatch, a full-service marketing agency headquartered in my hometown (Spokane, WA) that works with small and mid-size businesses across 6+ states.
  • I also collaborate with partners on AI-driven solutions that empower people and small businesses. I’m passionate about supporting these populations during this period of rapid tech development.
Getting to Omaha:
  • My wife Emma and I have lived across the country while she completed her graduate degrees — including time in New York City and Hawaii — before she joined the faculty at Creighton University last fall, which made Omaha our forever home.
My Rotary Inspiration:
  • My grandfather was a longtime Rotarian in central Washington, and after he passed last year, I found myself house hunting in Omaha — where I ran into Ward Peters on the sidewalk who planted the seed for me to get involved.
Hobbies:
  • Outside of work, you’ll find me on the yoga mat, in the ceramic studio, in the garden, playing sports, or working at a coffee shop in Dundee.
I’m genuinely excited to find ways to support the Omaha community through this club and to carry on a tradition that meant a good deal to my grandfather.

Scholarship Luncheon Highlights
The 49th annual Scholarship Luncheon was an event alive with a festive atmosphere as Suburban Rotary honored 10 worthy students with scholarships to pursue their higher education dreams.  Students, families, teachers and administrators joined club Rotarians and mayors from the Omaha Metro area to celebrate their achievements.  Master of Ceremonies Clayton Anderson regaled the audience with stories and jokes. Rotarian table hosts introduced each student and shared each one’s story of success. We could not provide this program without our generous scholarship donors.  Many thanks to the Scholarship Committee, headed by Suzi Brehmer, for their months of hard work to make this event a reality. Here is a slide show with some pictures from the event.

Governor Robert's April Message
Rotary District 5650 Rotarians—Welcome to April! “No winter lasts forever; no spring skips its turn. April is a promise that May is bound to keep, and we know it.” Having grown up on a farm and ranch, I think this quote by Hal Borland, writer, journalist, and naturalist, born May 14th, 1900, in Sterling, Nebraska, speaks to the seasonal transition that spring represents for hope and renewal as we move toward May.

We definitely need the promise of moisture and calm weather. March was a difficult month for our region with droughts and wildfires. In western Nebraska so many people are looking for better days ahead, where the wildfires have caused so much damage. Fortunately, like our own devastating tornados that ripped across Nebraska and Iowa, from two years ago, April 26th, 2024, the wildfires have also brought people together to help those in need including Rotarians to “Unite for Good.”

I wanted to highlight the successful volunteer efforts of our fellow Rotarians located in Rotary District 5630 located to the west of our District 5650. Hot Meals USA, a nonprofit, started by a Rotarian in the Kearney Rotary Club, has been serving free meals to firefighting crews from across the area nonstop with help from Rotary volunteers in Ogallala and North Platte. Rotary District 5630.

Past District Governor 2024-25, Lorena Beckius, has worked nonstop to help organize volunteers and donations for Hot Meals USA volunteer feeding locations in Ogallala and North Platte. The Rotary and community volunteers have staffed three shifts 7 days a week for the past few weeks helping to gather supplies and to prepare and serve meals.

Hot Meals USA is the same group that came to our help a couple of years ago when we faced our own disaster after the April 26th, 2024 tornados. I am including their website in case you would like to help or donate. https://www.hotmealsusa.org/. You can also follow Hot Meals USA on their Facebook page and please find a signup link with current volunteer opportunities.

That brings me to Rotary’s Area of Focus for April – Protecting the Environment
https://www.rotary.org/en/our-causes/protecting-environment

"Rotary shares an interest in protecting our common legacy: the environment. We are committed to supporting activities that strengthen the conservation and protection of natural resources and advance ecological sustainability. We empower communities to embrace local solutions, create innovative service projects, and access grants and other resources to foster harmony between people and nature.

Rotary makes change happen

We work with communities to implement service projects that improve the environment and transform lives. Thriving ecosystems can support people’s health, create economic opportunities, and help build peace.

Rotary’s Partnership with the United Nations Environment Program

Through Rotary and the United Nations Environment Program Community Action for Fresh Water initiative, Rotary clubs can protect, restore, and sustain their local freshwater ecosystems. Interested in getting involved? Visit communityactionforfreshwater.org to find out what other clubs are doing and learn how your club can act today.”
