Meeting re-cap 4/28

Last week Jim Conway and Madeline Moyer served as our greeters. Angie Bingham gave the invocation. We had several announcements and recognition of the Scholarship Circle members. We also had a new member introduction. Jared Bakewell filled in as Secretary last week. Jeff Shannon spoke on Nebraska Special Olympics and we heard from one of the athletes. The RISK bag was at $598 and someone won a free lunch.

Welcome Mike Fosdick!

Last week Gary Stoneburg introduced us to new member Mike Fosdick. Mike is is the V.P. of the Mortgage Division with Security National Bank. Mike has been in banking for over 45 years and spent most of that time in Lincoln. He relocated to Omaha and started with Security National Bank in 2015.

Mike is originally from Lincoln and attended two years of college at Wayne State and finished his degree at UNL. He also holds a Graduate School of Banking Certificate from the University of Colorado in Boulder.

Mike is married to Jane and they have 6 children and 11 grandchildren. In his free time, Mike enjoys watching the grandkids play sports and dance, boating, and golfing. Welcome, Mike!

Suburban Rotary Charitable Foundation Fundraiser

Thank you all for your support of our fundraiser which supports all of our club's activities including our fabulous Scholarship Program. We reached our goal by raising $41,010 last week. Even though the drive is over, you can give to our Foundation at any time.

Staff Day May 12th

The annual luncheon where we show appreciation to staff from work is May 12th. Lunch will be $15 and a buffet. Please mark this date to bring someone to Rotary whom you want to appreciate.

Prospect Park Cemetery Clean-Up

Prospect Park Cemetery Clean-Up- mark your calendar for May 14th!

Please arrive between 10 a.m.-2 p.m. If you can't stay the whole time, that is okay.

It would be wonderful if people had weed whackers to bring them as the trimming around gravestones is appreciated.....or hand held clippers. Wonderful for folks to bring outdoor yard utensils.....rakes/brooms/hedge trimmers/yard waste bags/dandelion diggers/shovels/work gloves/trash picker-uppers (there sometimes is a lot of litter along the fence lines that enclose the cemetery on the west, south and north sides.)

The Prospect Village neighborhood is also having a clean-up day and following that a free ice cream social. They have invited US!!!

The ice cream social starts at 2 pm at the new Pocket Park at 1715 N 35th St. ---across from Franklin School.

It's a free event, not a fundraiser.

Brag For Bucks

Last week Jared Bakewell had a brag for bucks for the launch party for his new business Proseeds. It will be held at The Waiting Room Lounge from 4:30-6:30 tomorrow night, May 3rd. (Address: 6212 Maple St.) All are invited.

Brag for Bucks can be made by any Suburban Rotarian- just tell the Secretary. Personal brags are $5 and business brags are $10.

Omaha Downtown Rotary's 8th Grade Honor Roll luncheon

The Rotary Club of Omaha (Downtown) will honor 425 local 8^th grade students at the 89^th annual eighth grade Rotary Honor Roll Luncheon. The luncheon will be held on Wednesday, May 4th at 11:30 am at the CenturyLink Center in Omaha.

The students who will be recognized were chosen from 8,300 8^th grade students at 57 metro area schools. Teachers and administrators selected the students based on criteria provided by Rotary.

“Each of the 425 students we will recognize at our luncheon should be proud of their accomplishment,” said Sean Olson, President for the Rotary Club of Omaha (also known as the Downtown Rotary Club). “They were selected based on their leadership, character, scholarship and presence. Downtown Rotary is proud to honor these hard working students.”

This year’s Rotary Honor Roll speaker is actor, comedian and magician and Omaha native, Pat Hazell. One of the original writers for NBC's Seinfeld and a Tonight Show veteran, Hazell is a critically acclaimed playwright and a contributing commentator to National Public Radio. He now resides in Austin Texas, but will be returning to Omaha to share his thoughts on leadership and getting involved in something you’re passionate about.

No tickets will be sold at the event. To order tickets to the Rotary Honor Roll luncheon, visit the Omaha Downtown Rotary website (http://honorroll.omaharotary.org). Reservations and payment must be received by Monday, April 25^th. Seating is made in the order reservations are received.
